Summary: A Sham
Comment: I bought this book second-hand in a used book store (thank goodness I didn't pay full price for it). To say that originality -- the chief reason for buying such a collection -- is lacking in this compilation is like saying that Eric Clapton plays a mean guitar. Elyse Sommer, aided by Dorrie Weiss, manage to come up with a collection of metaphors which concentrate on such a small corner of the universe (mainly feminist-oriented and contemporary with a few well-worn Shakespear quotes) one winds up parched for inspiration, particularly after having been inflicted with such inanities as (under the 'Music/Composer' category): "he went for the roller coaster." Wheee! THAT was original! The authoresses also concentrate heavily on jewish-culture quotes and metaphors by jewish writers. While of course there is nothing wrong with this, perhaps the authors might do well to bear in mind that less than 3% of the U.S. population is actually jewish and might perhaps be looking for something a little less ethnocentric? Finally, I believe I will be joined by many in my dismay with the attempt of the author to review her own book (i.e., hype it), on the Amazon website. Not only does this involve the metaphysical problem of objective criticism of one's own work, it's the critical equivalent of trying to stack the deck. In short, it lacks ethical probity. (Will Ms. Weiss, and other cronies now, at the instigation of the Ms. Sommer, write a flurry of five-star reviews in order to offset this negative one? My point: where does this end? It ends with unbiased critique.) But, about the book itself: if you're looking for the awe-inspiring metaphor, I promise you, don't bother. Mine's going back to the used bookshop.

Summary: A review from the co-editor
Comment: "The greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor" according to Aristotle. This compilation of more than 6,500 fully sourced and annoted examples, including 800 Shakespearean metaphors was a true labor of love and I'm delighted that Visible Ink, newly independent from its large conglomerate parent company, has chosen to re-issue this sturdy new hard cover version of the original. Nothing is changed from the original hard cover or the trade paperback -- except the price....
