Summary: one of the best I've read in a while
Comment: "Life of Pi" is a lovely, intelligent and unique novel - one of the best I've read in a while.
Though I found Pi's views on the lives of zoo animals a bit off (in fact they made me not WANT to like the book!), he is an incredibly endearing, smart character whom I could not help respecting and rooting for. He is a teenage boy - a practicing Christian, Muslim AND Hindu (all at the same time - much to the consternation of his family and various religious mentors)who escapes a sinking ship in a lifeboat shared by an orangutan, a hyena and a tiger.
Pi and the tiger survive for 227 amazing days in the lifeboat (during which they make an amazing 'botanical' discovery worthy of Star-Trek in its Mr. Spock days) before landing on the coast of Mexico. There Pi provides the authorities two different explanations for his amazing survival.
It's up to you to decide which one is true...
Really worth reading, "Life of Pi" stands out brightly amongst the novels I've read in the past few years, and I'll be recommending it for years to come.

Summary: A Modern-Day Parable¿Great for Discussion
Comment: This book was recommended by so many friends it became vital that I read it. And just before I reached the end, I figured out why. First of all, it's well written and creative-a story like none other I've read or imagined. But it took me a while to get into it. I set it down again and again. As friends kept asking, "did you finish?" I felt it more of an assignment than a reading pleasure, and sometimes, readers like me just need an assignment. So, I plowed through.

I was not disappointed.

In the Life of Pi there is a tremendous amount of detail-some seems excessive-but some paints beautiful portraits and draws such complex and fascinating characters, that I feel it (the book) deserves all the recognition it has received. The author must be applauded on his ability to tell the story with an incredible amount of knowledge-of religions, zoology and the life of a castaway. It's fun to discuss and to hear the opinions of other readers, especially to find out whether or not they delved the meaning(s) (or any meanings) of the young boy's tall tale.

I definitely recommend this book, and will look into other works by this talented writer.

Summary: Slow Cooked Pi
Comment: Once I reached the end, I had enjoyed reading the book. The beginning was agonizingly slow. All that set up about religion and the zoo and the family...pretty dull. I was expecting a survival story, not a treatise on religious philosophies. Sorry, I don't read to tax my brain...I read to escape. I did enjoy the ending...slight twist and all. I can understand now why M. Night Shyamalan is interested in filming this book. So, if you can get past the slow beginning and get to the meat of the story, you'll enjoy it.
