Summary: A must read for students of religion and politics
Comment: Leege and Kellstedt assemble the top scholars in the subfield of religion and politics to study virtually every aspect of the relationship between the two. This anthology adresses questions that have previously been neglected in political research such as: what role does Christian conservatism play in determing political attitudes, vote choice, and campaign strategies. Moving beyond the traditional Catholic/Protestant/Jewish breakdown of religious belief structures, these authors compare and contrast religious cleavages based on denominational, doctrinal, and self assesments. Firmly embedding the sociological, personal and institutional forces of religion within the history of American politics is a long overdue task which these authors do exceptionally well. The only potential downfall of the book is that it is written in a highly academic language which may be inaccesable to anyone with simply a personal curiosity in the role religion plays in politics.
