Summary: Young Brendan learns the philosophy of "Let's play two!"
Comment: Young Brendan Fanning is the centerfielder for his little league team, the Cubs, and he has "Playoff Dreams." But his team is tied for last place and only four team in the six-team league make it to the playoffs. Brendan is a pretty good player, but he cannot win baseball games by himself and the thought that he is going to miss out on the playoffs is starting to make him say things to his teammates he should not be seeing. Brendan's father does not know much about baseball, but Uncle Jack has been a lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs, and he takes Brendan to a game at Wrigley Field. There Brendan learns about what it means to be a fan of your team in thick and thin, and about the philosophy behind the idea of "Let's play two!"

Author Fred Bowen distinguishes his juvenile sports stories by working in players and events from baseball history to make a point. Baseball fans will know that the history lesson in "Playoff Dreams" is going to come from Ernie Banks, the Hall of Fame shortstop and first baseman for the Chicago Cubs who played 2,528 games in nineteen years while hitting 512 home runs, and never even played in the playoffs let along a World Series. At the back of this AllStar SportsStory book young readers learn the real story about Ernie Banks and other terrific players, such as Hall of Fame and ex-Cub pitcher Ferguson Jenkins, who never made it to the post season playoffs.

It is easy to pick up on the lesson that Bowen is trying to teach in this book, which has illustrations by Ann Barrow, and the bits and pieces of baseball history he works in are always solid. But Bowen also pays attention to the details of the baseball games the kids play in these books. There is something to be said for having the physical talents to play the game, but playing with heart and playing with your head as equally as important, which makes Bowen sort of a writer-coach. Speaking of nice details, take a careful look at the cover of "Playoff Dreams" and check out the shadows on the wall.

Summary: This was a great sports story!!
Comment: I am six years old and just started playing baseball this year. It was great to read a book about a boy who loved baseball so much even if his team wasn't winning. The end was very good and very exciting.

Summary: A terrific book for kids who love sports.
Comment: Our family loves Fred Bowen's books because each story includes a little real sports history. The history in Playoff Dreams is about Ernie Banks of the Chicago Cubs. He was a fantastic player with a fantastic attitude. He never got down on the game even though his team never made it to the World Series. The main character in Playoff Dreams is a centerfielder named Brendan. He is a really good player but he's bummed because his teammates stink. He goes to a game at Wrigley Field (home of the Chicago Cubs). The whole scene at Wrigley Field is very interesting and readers will be surprised at what Brendan does (reluctantly) because of a long-standing real-life tradition with Cubs fans. (It's really neat the way the author pulls in real history.) Brendan learns about the legend of Ernie Banks at Wrigley Field and the lesson about optimism takes root slowly in Brendan. Parents will love the moral of the story and kids will love all the sports action (there's lots of it.)
