Summary: a quiet chorus of voices that tugs at the mind and heart
Comment: I loved this book. Poetry to me is the purest form of writing - a distillation of thought and feeling - and Tug exemplifies that process. This book ranges widely over social and personal terrain, using a variety of voices and personalities that reveal not only the author's mastery of form but a deep empathy and understanding of the complicated connections among human beings. Some of the poems, such as "The Saint's First Wife" and "Poem Without a Title," are tiny, focused flames. Others, such as "Yard Talk" and "Dream of My Mother's Wedding" seem so personal and yet are so different that you marvel at the poet's understanding of human relationships. It's a wonderful book.

Summary: A New Sound
Comment: Occassionally a new sound is heard. A new face, a beautiful one, enters the party and every one stops to look. Here that face is black and masculine, sensual and humorous. In Tug everyone must stop to listen. Through a range of poems and subject-matter Patterson tosses his log on the fire that is American Poetry and Baby, it burns, it sings. Tug is an wonderful book!
