Summary: A very original book
Comment: Think Jerry Seinfeld meets Gabriel Marquez. This book is outrageously funny for the first half of the book. It had me in stitches, especially Alex's half-baked command of English which breathes life into his simplistic, lovable character in the most amazing fashion. The story pans from past to present, back to past and interweaves episodes in the life of Jonathan's forefathers and his very own adventures in search of a woman named Augustine. As the story progresses, the style of writing switches to a pensive and brooding mood - bringing out the horrific accounts of the holocaust (with too few scenes actually) and romantic tales of the protagonist's grandfather, Safran. The love stories were so reminiscent of Marquez that I could've sworn it was co-authored by Marquez himself. So to all the Gabriel fans out there, you'll have something to look forward to! JSF's prose is rather poetic and being not all too comfortable with it, I gather there's a few layers to the story which remain unraveled for me. Overall, a fun read ' light, original, and substantial.

Summary: Haunting, hysterical and hypnotic
Comment: "Everything is Illuminated" is not a book you will soon forget. It is a masterpiece of creative energy and of the unique vision of its creator. Foer has wrought a compelling narrative that strikes the perfect balance between its dramatic core and the humorous tone he often adopts. The writing is complex without becoming difficult or heavy, and even the relentless assault on the English language that comes whenever Alex takes over the narration is a joy to read. "Everything..." is the story of three very different men who embark on a quest to find an old town that has become lost and a woman who lived there. On the surface their purpose is simply to find the woman who saved 'the author's' family during WWII and to thank her. But there is so much more. These men are seeking identity, meaning, a purpose, an escape, and absolution. What they find is what makes this book a masterpiece. It was a close call to choose the best book of 2002 ("Middlesex" and "Life of Pi" being the other contenders) but without a doubt that title has to be given to "Everything is Illuminated".

Summary: One Wild and Crazy Guy
Comment: To answer those quandried about "spleening" -- methinks Foer's character functions it to mean "chastize" or some other term of reprobation.
As for the narrator Alex's use of this kind of misassembled English, Foer stole it from the Wild and Crazy Guys skits of SNL (who stole it from others poking fun at Polish/Czech "accents" by having them speak with a Thesaurian formality). The SNL skits were funny coz they lasted 5 minutes max. Foer's is decidedly NOT funny coz it last hundreds of pages.
And would those one-star reviewers complaining about how Foer's just another corporate packaged, good-looking guy take another look at the guy's dust jacket photo. The guy's a frickin geek mensch or whatever that word is (and this coming from a geek mensch or whatever that word is).
A confusing inpenetrable read that had me pining for whatizname's _The Corrections_.
