Summary: Life changing events
Comment: I did not know what I wanted to be when I grew up. It occurred to me when I was 39. I wanted to be a music teacher. I started college at 39, full-time and with 3 children and a husband. I did the first two years at a local junior college. I started an hour commute to a university my junior year. All the commuting, studying, classtime, children, family responsibilities were taking a toll on me. Grades were excellent; but I was always feeling overworked. One assignment given to me by a conducting teacher probably 10-15 years my senior at the time made a huge impact on my life. She assigned extracurricular reading assignments with a follow-up summary as ways to make extra points. Since I had the over-achiever attitude (really more like can I cut it along side the 18- and 19-year-old kids attitude), I did every assignment. One of those assignments was to read "Quality Work, Guilt Free Play" by Neil Fiore. Oh if I had only had this phamplet 20 years earlier! My husband had always used daytimers and was always trying to organize me and my day. Now I understand! Using Fiore's system helped me organize my hectic life at the time, stop procrastination (OK! do less of it!), achieve more, deprive myself less, and enjoy my life! By stepping outside of myself to exam what made me feel better physically (8 hours of sleep and exercising), what made me happy (watching a favorite TV show, going to a Friday night football game, doing something special with my children, attend church), doing what had to be done (housework, laundry, classes, commute time, homework), then putting it all down on an "unschedule" instead of trying to keep up with all of it in my mind was the most freeing thing I've ever done for myself.

This year I am teaching music/choir at a middle school. Many of the students are overachievers. They play sports, are on the student council, are a cheerleader, are in every club imaginable, are honor roll students, are on the drama team, etc. Then there are some students who have a problem "remembering" that they had an assignment or that their concert is tonight, not next week. It is not just my students but many through out the school. When the faculty was asked to make suggestions as to what they might like to have on a "Teacher Inservice Day", I thought "the unschedule" would be perfect. Just think, if every teacher throughout the school teaches their students how to use the unschedule and requires (and follows through) that each student take their daytimer or assignment book to every class and then home with them, WHAT WILL THEY AND WE AS A SCHOOL BE ABLE TO ACHIEVE! I have ordered a set of the book and tape for the school library for students to check out, one set for the teachers to use, and one set for me to keep. Thank You, Neil Fiore!
