Comment: I liked the last applied book and I like this one. Although, the publisher should not have called is LW 6.5 & 7. It does not contain very much LightWave 7 specific information but only a copule of things like sasqaatch for fur. I know that the information works for version 7, but the title is extrememly misleading, it's obvious they rushed out the 7 info as it is lacking.

If you want some good tutorials and know how to use Lightwave, this is a decent book. If you really want to learn the ins and outs of Lightwave 7, this is NOT the book for you. Dont get me wrong as the information is good just not full coverage. Jenn's character rig is really good and Dave's textures are nicely detailed. Joes coverage of understanding Lightwave is poor at best as he neglects to really explain the modeler viewports (you can do more than just 'view' your models in the perspective view) and doesn't talk about too many tools or modeling methods like Inside Lightwave does. I have all the books on lightwave even todd paines painfull 4.0 book. perhaps i'm strange but the publisher promotes how long and how many steps the tutorials are when honestly it's sort of annoying. Lengthy tutorials are good but that leaves little room for more information. I also didn't find the information on the spreadsheet, complex text design, particle information, lighting, or graph editor to be very good. I think there's no particle information at all which is a huge part of lightwave and one of the reasons i got the software.

Personally I'm waiting for Inside Lightwave 7.

Summary: Excellent collection of Lightwave tutorials
Comment: First off, this book is worth the price alone for the massive coverage of the surface editor. Two full chapters are devoted to surfacing and the author includes some very useful tips involving the surface editor. The chapter on architecture is excellent, you will truly become a master of beveling after completing the tutorials in this chapter.

The title is somewhat misleading though. The majority of the book focuses on LW6.5, only the last chapter is devoted to version 7.0. The last chapter moves very quickly through a couple of the new features in 7.0 and the coverage of these topics is very light. Saslite is briefly mentioned in this chapter, as are a few other notable differences in the version.

However, due to the vast similarity in the 6.5/7.0/7.5 interface, you'll have little if any problems working through the tutorials in the book.

This is a definite must-have for any Lightwave user. The book may be difficult to find these days, but you may get lucky like I did and find it for a bargain through one of the used book resellers.

Summary: Lightwave Applied, Version 6.5 & 7
Comment: I am a totally new user to Lightwave so this may help some newbies. This book is excellent for getting your feet wet and exploring a lot of what Lightwave is capable of. The reason I did not rate it five stars is because I would have like the authors to provide more instruction on the more advanced modeling tools like subpatching and metaforming. But, in all,
a well done book worth every penny.
