Summary: Underrated masterpiece on foreign policy
Comment: I have to concurr with the reviewer below - did Arizona Senator John McCain really read this before saying that Buchanan did a great disservice to World War II veterans? Although I think McCain is an honorable man, his opinions on it, in my view, are far off the map, along with the rest of the liberal media.

Buchanan does a splendid job in both the historical part of the book (which to my surprise, was quite lengthy - and no complaints here), and in his final conclusions and warning about current American foreign policy.

Probably the most striking part I believe was his parallel on our lack of military preparation before the War of 1812 to other events. Jefferson and Madison cut back on our military strength and paid for it in a brutally fought draw during the War of 1812. The lesson should have been learned right there and then, Buchanan argues, that we always need a strong defense to prepare ourselves against potential attackers. We learned this the hard way, or at least some did, when the Japanese had the advantage on us during the first 1-2 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hopefully, the new administration knows this, and strengthens our military while cutting back on these inane peacekeeping trips, most of which fail anyway (i.e. Somalia.)

The attacks on Buchanan that the book sympathizes with the Nazis are also unfounded. Buchanan makes an interesting case when he argues that the United Kingdom and France giving the war guarantee to Poland directly led to World War II. While I do think Hitler would have eventually went after Western Europe in any case, I do not believe that Buchanan is sympathetic to the Nazis by any stretch of the imagination in this book. That charge is ridiculous and undermines this great work in foreign policy, and it is also typical of the biased media that prevails today.

In conclusion, while I disagree with a few of his points, this is a great work of American foreign policy, and it should serve as a warning that we should always maintain a strong national defense and put ourselves into every third world fistfight on the planet.

Summary: Excellent reappraisal of WW2 strategy
Comment: Far from being a Nazi sympathizing apologist, Pat Buchanan is, in fact, a brilliant geo- political thinker who posits the theory, in this book, that if the western powers had simply let Hitler and Stalin have it out for a few years, nazism and communism would have essentially destroyed each other. The result of this policy, had it been followed by Britain and France, would have meant that hundreds of thousands of lives in the democracies could have been saved while the two brutal dictators fought each other to the death. Buchanan asserts that communism could have been stopped cold, and 50 years of cold war could have been averted. This is an extremely scholarly work worthy of appreciation and not the false and hysterical slanders that have been thrown at it by Buchanan's enemies.

Summary: "Pat Buchanan's rhetoric has true grit"- William Buckley Jr.
Comment: It's good to hear from a true Conservative nowadays.

Pat Buchanan is perhaps one of the last hopes for Conservatives in America and this book tells it like it is. Pat was about as Historically accurate as possible and he takes stabs at everyone. I think it's important for Conservatives to follow in this great man's footsteps and leave the Republican Party to rot.

In hear is the prediction of the Second Gulf War and the War On Terror with Osama Bin Laden leaving the world full of fear. And it was written in 1999.

All in all I think Pat Buchanan get's a bad rap; he is often called a racist and a Fascist, it's unfair and couldn't be any further from the truth. Pat Buchanan is a great man, a man of integrity and a man of honesty.
