Summary: An innovation in composition research
Comment: Johanek takes the field of composition by storm by combining multiple forms of research, from qualitative to quantitative, and applying it to a variety of contexts in teaching writing. With specific examples of how numerical evidence is useful in studies that have historically been based on anecdotes and personal experiences, Johanek shows us that composition researchers have been ignoring a vital aspect of empirical inquiry in the field. I have a new respect for statistical analysis because of the clarity of Johanek's arguments and the effective presentation of findings, both qualitative and quantitative. I strongly suggest this book to professors and graduate students in composition both for personal enrichment and for use in the classroom.
