Summary: An OK book, but it's NOT about remodeling
Comment: (Barely over 2.5 stars)
"Remodeling Kitchens" is a deceptive book, because it's not about remodeling at all. This book shows you SOME of the steps required to build a new kitchen, with many excellent photographs depicting the process. It illustrates several useful options for floor and countertop materials. The book doesn't tell you much of anything about how to remodel an existing kitchen. In fact, the book doesn't TELL a lot as a general rule. It SHOWS some of the steps involved in the building process. But if you want to do anything with walls, ceilings, windows, or doors in your kitchen you're out of luck; "Remodeling Kitchens" doesn't include any information on these topics. The last time I checked most kitchens had all of these features.
Remodeling information that's included:
- A few paragraphs (no pictures) about layering over existing flooring
- Remove trim & old cabinets
- Paint old cabinets
- Use existing waste-vent stacks
Remodeling information that's missing:
- Demolition
- Leveling a subfloor to prepare for new flooring
- Tying in to existing plumbing supply lines
- Relocating a sink
- Installing under-mounted sinks
- Refinishing cabinets other than by painting
- Fishing wires through walls
- Using remodel cans for recessed lighting
- Installing or repairing wall & ceiling drywall
- Adding finish treatment (paint, texture) to walls & ceilings
- Removing or installing windows and doors
- Adding window and door trim
Compared to the EXCELLENT Black&Decker hardcover books ("The Complete Photo Guide to Home Repair", "The Complete Photo Guide to Home Improvement") this 159 page paperback is a significant disappointment. It's got pretty good treatment on flooring and countertop choices and installation, and acceptable coverage of plumbing and wiring for new construction or major (start from the bare studs) remodeling. It's almost no help at all if you're considering a minor (leave all the walls in place) remodeling job.
