Summary: A Great New Voice in Horror
Comment: The Rising might very well be the best zombie story in ages. Not only is it scary and gruesome, it is also skillfully written and emotionally striking. This is the very stuff horror is made of. Brian Keene might very well be our answer to all those long years of bad horror.

Jim is trapped in his bomb shelter, the whole world around him dying. Even his pregnant wife has died to rise again to become part of the undead. When Jim receives a call on his cell from his son in New Jersey, he knows he has no choice but to get to him before the undead claim his life.

During his travels, he encounters an old preacher, an old survivor and his son and a military group that seems to be causing more harm than good. Many more characters are mixed to the lot, counting a prostitute with a cocaine addiction and a man who might just be the reason the dead have come to invade the earth. All of them are working for the same goal; survival.

Brutal, terrifying and honest, The Rising is that rare horror book that completely delivers the goods. You never really know where Keene's twisted imagination will lead you next, and it is this very unpredictability that makes The Rising stand high and tall above all others. The book offers many moment that will stay with you for a long time; a scene concerning a pregnant woman, and another one about a mute boy I will not soon forget.

The book is peopled with dozens of characters and yet, you never confuse any of them. Keene has found a very distinct voice for each of his characters. All of them feel very real. And the fact that Keene never falters, not even in the book's final moments, only enhances this truly terrifying experience.

Take note of Brian Keene's name. The Rising announces a bright new voice in horror fiction. He reminds us what real horror is all about.

Summary: Must-read book for horror fans!
Comment: Wow, here is an author who's got his finger on the pulse of contemporary pop fiction! Keene has performed the impossible as he breathes new life into the into the rotting zombie-fiction genre. Improves upon some of the concepts you may have seen in the films "Cabin Fever" and "21 Days".

Simple yet satisfyingly developed characters, zombified gore, constant tension, and a well conveyed post-apocalyptic mood all contribute to make this one of the most enjoyable horror reads out there.

Keene demonstrates a refreshing flexibility uncommon in other horror writers. This is a voice from the future of horror. A great book that captures your attention and throws you a few fun surprises.

Summary: Flawed yet readable
Comment: Mr. Keene has taken Zombies to a whole new level. The question is whether he should have or not. Classic zombie lovers beware. This is not your typical dead coming back to life zombie fare. They think, speak, plan ambushes and even drive cars and use firearms. While he hints at what is bringing the dead back to life I felt like I was never in on the whole secret. Are they demons from a void or souls banished to hell finally set free to return? Our heroes make it through impossible odds while EVERYONE around them dies. I also found the references to dead babies and children a little extreme. (There were three dead babies in the first four chapters.) While I find realism in horror a nice change I got the idea that babies would also come back to life the first time around. Also the graphic description of blowing dead children's brains out was a little extreme. I don't want to bash the entire book, as it was very good on some levels. I did like the idea of zombie animals. Mr. Keene also appears to have left the ending up to the imagination of his readers as it never really explains, well anything. There needs to be a sequel and it needs better editing than this book got. If you're an open-minded zombie buff then check it out, but if you're a classic zombie lover like myself pass it up.
