Summary: I love it! Use it with the Radice book
Comment: I highly recommend this book in addition to Bengali : A Complete Course for Beginners by William Radice. The Radice book is excellent but after getting half way through I was still confused by syntax. Introduction to Bengali cleared up my confusion in the first few chapters. This book won't teach you the Bengali script but it is an excellent way to learn both grammar and syntax. The book is meant for use with a tape but the tape is often not sold with the book. However I still found this to be a great learning tool without a tape.

Each chapter is broken down into five sections.

1. Conversation
The book starts with simple sentences such as "I study in Chicago," gives you the Bengali translation (using Romanized transliteration) which is "ami sikagote pori." It then breaks down the parts of speech. For example, por is the stem of the verb "read, study", the -i in pori refers to a 1st person present ending, and the -te in sikagote refers to location in this case meaning 'in'.
2. Drills
If you don't have a tape you would skip this
3. Grammar
Explains grammar concepts that come up in the conversation piece. Grammar in the Radice book can sometimes get confusing. This book cleared up some of my confusion.
4. Pattern Drills
Numerous practice drills are given in English that you must translate into Bengali. I found this very useful to reinforce what I had learned in the Conversation and Grammar sections.
5. Vocabulary
Breakdown of all the words used in the Conversation section by part of speech. It even includes idioms.

I had really been struggling to learn Bengali before getting this book. It's a fairly difficult language. But Dimock makes it simple to understand. Once again you will not learn Bengali script from this book. You will need the Radice book for that. Get both the Radice and Dimock books and you should have no problem learning Bengali.
