Summary: One for the reference shelf . . .
Comment: Anyone seriously interested in the American Civil War ends up with a sizable shelf of reference volumes, and this one should be on that shelf. After an introductory year-by-year summary of campaigns and major battles (easily found in many other sources), he discusses the organization, weapons, formal tactics, and actual practices for each branch of the service. This includes such uncommon units as the Mississippi Marine Brigade and the Indian Home Guards. Where else are you going to find the details of each state militia's formation and organization, both North and South, not to mention the standard uniform? Everything here is exemplified in hundreds of period photos with excellent captions (especially useful for militia uniforms), and there are numerous excerpts from personal reports, diaries, memoirs, and regimental histories. Katcher also includes short biographies of major military figures, each accompanied by a portrait (not the same ones you'll find in _Generals in Blue_ and _Generals in Gray_). And there are footnotes and short bibliographies throughout. An excellent ready-reference tool.

Summary: A good place to look first for details on the Civil War
Comment: "The Civil War Source Book" attempts to provide a one-volume reference book on the armies, battles, weapons and leaders of the Civil War similar to "The Napoleonic Source Book." The first section looks at the campaigns of the Eastern and Western theaters year by year, paying attention to the naval conflicts as well. Other sections are devoted to "Weapons and the Pracitce of War" and "Military Life," while a substantive part of the book deals with the organizations of the oppsing armies, their composition, histories, uniforms and insignia, with individual treatment of the contingents contributed by each fo the waring states. Critical biographies of the principal military and political leaders as well as bibliographical listings conclude the volume. "The Civil War Source Book" is a straight-forward reference book, that essentially offers everything you would ever find in an first-rate encyclopedia on these topics with a generous measure of the sort of detail you would expect from an almanac. Bottom line: If you are looking for details, Philip Katcher's book is an ideal place to start, although you can certainly go elsewhere for more detail.
