Summary: love the honesty
Comment: Congrats to Brendan Halpin on his searingly honest memoir. It's so refreshing when writers address this topic with honesty and humor rather than maudlin sentimentality. I couldn't disagree more with the reviews here who criticize him for this honesty. People would prefer he candy-coat it, I guess. It's funny--I read a similar book in my book group that I loved just as much, except it was fiction, called AFTER LUCY by Daniel Jones. It, too, is about this dilemma, told honestly and humorously from the husband's point of view. I'd recommend both of these books to anyone who's been through this situation, as I have. I don't know about you, but I find more comfort in reading about real emotions than Hollywood ones.

Summary: Incredible book!
Comment: This is the most amazing book I've ever read. Mr. Halpin writes with amazing honesty about his experience, without whitewash or apology. The book bounces back and forth between hilarious episodes that are all the more funny because often the people around them don't get it, to the laid-bare terror of dealing with cancer in someone you love and can't imagine living without. I can't stand sentimental books, and this isn't one, and yet some of his revelations took my breath away with their poignancy and honesty. I tend to be a library borrower rather than a book buyer, but this is one to own.

Summary: It's like I know these people...
Comment: If you want to know how Michener's "Fires of Spring" ends, read this book. If you laugh, if you cry, if you swear, you're alive. Grab it by the lapels and shake it. That's what Halpin does. It's too bad he's ambivalent about Dan Fogelberg - they sing the same song.
