Summary: A Politically Motivated and Extremely Biased Approach
Comment: This book includes a not too subtle assault on The Right. There is nothing wrong with assaulting The Right, the problem lies in the fact that this book provides no evidence or even arguments for the claims it asserts, so why include them? This just tells us some of the authors' real motivations. Here is my favorite quote: "We have, at times, consciously and deliberately left out some of these great stories, ones that have the potential to become 'bad data' to buttress stereotypes, reaffirm the ideology and rhetoric of the Right and reinscribe dominant representations." (pg. 49) Paraphrase: 'We are politically motivated, and we know that we are always correct. Therefore, we can justify using only data (stories) that support our own beliefs and politics.'
This is hardly the role of a researcher and this can hardly be considered research. The fact that they admit to manipulating their data gives researchers (specifically qualitative researchers), and research in general, a bad name. If this is what subjective research is all about, then it is not only worthless, it is detrimental. If you would like some expensive kindling or a good example of how NOT to do research, buy this book.

Summary: The Speed of the Speed Bumps
Comment: Mom's book was great. Yes, I really am her daughter checking out the site. So obviously I'm a litte partial. But since I have heard what this book is about since I was in fourth grade and have read the manuscript, I must say that it is quite good. Don't worry, she isn't putting me up to this. Another book you might want to try if you liked Speedbumps, is The Unknown City by well you can guess Lois Weis, but also Michelle Fine. Check it out, you may find that you like it a lot. Then again who knows? Well, when I'm older and have actually read all of my mom's books, I'll come back and write a little better of a review. Well hope you like the book!C ya! P.S. (shh) my mom didn't want me to write this
