Summary: The Path to School Leadership: A Portable Mentor
Comment: Lee Bolman and Terrence Deal did another successful job in creating a book that is easy to understand. Having been familiar with the four frames used in this book, I was able to understand the concepts used to problem solve as a principal. The book takes you on a journey of a first year principal, Jaime Rodriguez with his veteran mentor, Dr. Brenda Conners and his quest for understanding the role of a leader. I recommend all principals keep this book near by as a reference for some problems that may arise. One advantage of this book is that it shows mistakes that are made as leaders and the consequences that can follow. Solutions are followed and it takes the reader into the life of Jaime Rodriguez and his fustrations and happy times. Bolman and Deal point out that as a leader we need to know who the key players are in an existing school (in Jaime's case it was the custodian and the school secretary). We also learn that communication and listening play a crucial role in successful leadership. This book provides an excellent short course on leadership and it promotes the view of the Total Quality Management (TQM) program. In the last chapters, we see roles switching between Jaime and Dr. Conners (Jaime becomes the mentor on the TQM concept). A final look at this "real-life" approach to learning leadership is the view of signpost that guide to the mastership of effective leadership discussed as an Epilogue.

Summary: The Path to School Leadership
Comment: The Path to School Leadership deals with the emotions and challenges of a new principal,Jaime Rodriguez. Sharing the experiences of Rodriquez is exactly what new recruits need.
The book gives prospective principals an inside look into the future. Your heart will ache for Rodriquez when he is called "The Tortilla Kid". You will feel the stresses of a new principal's life as you share the obstacles he faces when he tries to gain the respect and support of his new staff. The book also does a great job of capturing the importance of having an experienced mentor. Rodriguez without his mentor, Dr. Brenda Connors, would have been a disaster. She guides him by relating his classroom knowledge to the real world. This book is a must for all new principals.
TWO THUMBS UP FOR BOLMAN AND DEAL.

Summary: Traveling the Pathway
Comment: Wylene Sorapuru from New Orleans, LA. In the Path to School Leadership: A Portable Mentor, authors Bolman and Deal provide a highly readable book that pays attention to the novice leader. It focuses on not only having the knowledge to become an effective leader, but the "know how" to use it. Creatively using a dialogue in the book allows for the reader to reflect and put strategies of team building, shaping culture, and four frames that could take a lifetime to learn into practice immediately. The book offers insightful perspectives on leadership and change using real life experiences that assist a new principal in "finding their own individual pathway" and methods of traveling it to the end. This was an excellent book and I would recommend it to all new administrators on any level who are challenged with devising a journey to success. I consider this book a unique and valuable guide comprised of the complexities of leadership and the strategies to deal with them. In my opinion, this was a job well done by Bolman and Deal and I put this book on my top ten list of helpful books for new administrators.
