Summary: amazing
Comment: I love this book. It provides an outstanding overview of computers and computer related topics, and it goes into a surprising level of depth in each topic it addresses. The book contains 14 chapters:
1. Introduction to Using Computers. 2. Application Software and the World Wide Web. 3. The Components in the System Unit. 4. Input. 5. Output. 6. Storage. 7. The Internet. 8. Operating Systems and Utility Programs. 9. Communications and Networks. 10. Databases and Information Management. 11. Information Systems Development. 12. Program Development and Programming Languages. 13. Multimedia. 14. Security, Privacy, and Ethics.
The book also has excellent illustrations and special feature mini-sections. One thing to watch: I think the book is updated every year, so you might want to look for the current version (Discovering Computers 2001, etc.)
For similar information in a more basic format with less depth, I would recommend Ruth Maran's Computers Simplified, and Internet and World Wide Web Simplified.
