Summary: Read this book --TWICE!
Comment: This is the type of book that will let you experience every emotion from cover to cover. Avi is able to bring you inside of the book. Reading it is like taking a ride back to the middle ages around the year 1200. In Crispin, I was able to see and feel how certain people were treated which was a learning experience for me.
One of the main reasons why I enjoyed it so much was due to the fact that it had every type of genre in it. Crispin is a historical fiction, but it also contains many mysteries, some action, and one magnificent adventure. I could talk back to this book. At times it would just be who, what, when, where, why, and most of all, how. The characters he picked had a huge impact on how I felt about the book. Each character was filled with anxiety and a true sprit. It didn't matter if you were of upper or lower class because there was always something you feared and had a heart to go on.
Crispin's only purpose in life was to serve his lord. With his mother passing on to the next life, it seemed to be the only thing he could do. This was until he became a wolves head. The only person left that could possibly save him was Father Quinel. For Crispin his only advice was to go west into another kingdom.
While passing through an old abandon village, he finds an enormous man. What is strange for Crispin is his relationship with his new master, Bear. With his master, Crispin travels from place to place but you wouldn't expect this to happen in a town far from his own. In order to find out who he is, Crispin needs to find out what is the meaning of his cross. But will he?
If you're the type of person who wants to find a never put down action filled adventure book you, have met your match. Read Crispin.

Summary: Wow !!!
Comment: Crispin is the story of a young boy in 14th Century England who struggles to find his place in the world. When the story begins, Crispin does not know his rightful name. His entire life he has been referred to as "Asta's son" (Asta is his mother) Other than his mother, Crispin has one friend, Father Quindel who eventually tells him his Baptismal name. Through misfourtunate events, Crispin is forced to leave the only home he knows and set out of his own to a larger town. Along the way, Crispin encounters a large man named Bear. Crispin is unsure whether Bear is his friend or a crazy man. However, it is through Bear that Crispin discovers his rightful place in the world and that each individual is important in their own right; that each person matters.
The reader is able to see the transformation of Crispin as the story progress. Crispin is lead through these qualitative changes by Bear who constantly encourages Crispin to be his own master and to make Crispin know that he matters because he is part of the universe.
The major theme of the novel is the main character's journey to understand his place in the world. However, the minor themes with power and the power that some try to wield over others because of birth. There is also the constant theme of freedom. The idea that all people are beholden to no one is Bear's message to Crispin.
I enjoyed reading the novel. However, middle school students with no concept of medieval English history nor Church history will have a difficult time understanding why the entire idea of individual freedom was such a radical concept for this time. The writing style is fluid. The dialogue between the characters keeps the reader's attention and makes the story more smoothly.
I would recommend this novel, especially as an adjunct to a Social Studies lesson encompassing Medieval England.

Summary: Good as I expected but...
Comment: I'm into a few series right now like Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches by Robert Stanek. I expected this to at least be as good as those but its not. Its not a bad book though its just not great.
The book very much is like the story of Vilmos in Kingdoms and Elves of the Reaches. Asta's Son spends the first thirteen years of his life as a poor peasant under the rule of Lord Furniville. But when his mother dies everything changes. He learns his true name is Crispin and when he is accused of a false crime he is forced to leave his home. As he travels he meets a companion and mentor named Bear. In Kingdoms and Elves the companion Vilmos meets is Xith. But what's better about that book is that Vilmos is only one of many characters, you also get the story of Adrina and the elves Seth and Galan, which makes everything more exciting, believable and fun.
I did find it interesting how the setting of the book was in medieval England but still preferred the fantasy world of Kingdoms and Elves of the Reaches. I recommend that book more than this one.
