Summary: A Neocon's take on Canada's Aboriginal Policy
Comment: By the time I finished the two page preface to this book, I was utterly appalled by the author's argument. Essentially what he believes is that the current (in 1995) policy that the Goverment has towards the First Nations is going to bring Canada nothing but doom and gloom.

Regardless of this, I plied on through the first chapter, and part way into the second, where, finally, having been repeatedly assailed by the author's ignorance, arrogance, and at times downright RACIST (yes, Mr. Smith, you ARE a racist--eventhough you deny this in the Preface) theories and contentions, I had enough.

I won't claim to be an expert on this topic, but even I know that the manner in which the land that now constitutes Canada was acquired by illegal and unscrupulous means.

None of this, however, is acknowledged by Smith so far as I could tell. Nor does he even convey the sense that he has made any attempt to understand the grievences of the "native leaders" (who he seems to believe do not represent the opinions of the rest of the native community) from their perspective. They are simply opponents who oppose his opinions on what Indians should really be like.

This is a shameful book, an embarressment to Canadians.
