Summary: Dryden: Keen Powers of Observation.
Comment: It's not surprizing that one of the Canada's leading professional hockey goaltenders would have a sharp eye and a keen mind. Both are necessary to successfully transform a year of in-class observation and reflection into a meaningful book. Dryden does not hit the reader powerfully, but with subtlety. He describes high school classroom situations from the point of view of a member of the class, and then lets the reader peer into the minds of the teachers and administrators as they ponder those same events.
I like the book because it has helped me in my profession as a teacher to reflect on my own teaching situation, and to more fully grasp the often forgotten realities of today's students.
"In School" is a reflective work for teachers, parents and administrators to digest slowly. It should help them sink their roots of understanding a little deeper into the complex issues of the modern classroom, and perhaps pave some middle ground between polarized stakeholders in the educational field.
