Summary: Noble Ideas
Comment: The carefully chosen words are interesting as are the concepts. Perhaps some would make better lyrics for a song. Much of the perspective is from a liberal slant but its nevertheless thought-provoking. Easily read poems which invites rereading.

Summary: Deep with a streak of darkness
Comment: In a superficial reading of this book, one may see only the obvious simplicity of the poems. But a closer, more in-depth reading reveals a much more complex and intricate construction not immediately apparent. While the writing tends to have a dark perspective, each word appears to have been carefully chosen, and the author is able to say much with few words. It is this conciseness that makes these poems extremely readable. The author effectively uses rhyme as a tool to investigate and question subjects varying from war to religion (in particular, the religious right) to the judicial system to politicians. I have read this book several times and each time I discover something new that I missed during my previous reading.

Summary: Powerful Poetry
Comment: Racism, religion, war, and the American political system are just a few of the modern and often-controversial social justice issues that are addressed in this thoughtful book. The author avoids overcomplicating his writing with obscure or enigmatic symbolism, preferring poems that are simply stated, yet extremely powerful and provocative. An excellent book.
