Summary: A brief history of tatting.
Comment: Pam Palmer has written an outstandingly informative, especially for its size, book on the history of tatting. Although longer books on tatting history have been written, this one gets the prize for being the most accurate. Most other authors confuse knotting with tatting as it used a similar, albeit much larger, shuttle. There are even actual pictures of knotting, so no one may ever confuse these again (knotting isn't even lace). Ms. Palmer also correctly traces the development of tatting to the early-mid nineteenth century, while other authors (including Elgiva Nicholls, one of the more articulate writers on the subject) state that tatting originated as a method of finishing burial cloths in ancient Egypt! This last statement can be attributed to Lady Katherine Hoare, but it has been quoted widely. There are many well-chosen illustrations, some especially fine examples of tatting, beautiful shuttles and even a portrait of Mlle. Riego --the mother of modern tatting. All this makes for an exceptionally fine and enjoyable read. Enthusiastically recommended.

Summary: Excellent resource for any tatter!
Comment: There are so few books written on the history of tatting, and this one book is a short but sweet synopsis of the origins and development of tatting over the past two hundred years. Pam Palmer has written a small book that's big on information, covering many aspects of tatting, from its relative, knotting, to modern achievements during the latter part of the twentieth century. This book is filled with interesting photographs of tatting work, shuttles and other illustrations that add to the easy-to-read text. A must-have for any tatter's library.
