Summary: The Story Factor is a rare gem ... worth six stars plus
Comment: I first read The Story Factor by Annette Simmons after completing the book "The Story" by Hollywood screenwriter Robert McKee. I was fascinated by a Harvard Business Review interview with McKee on the use of story in influencing business decisions. Annette Simmons has taken story telling to an entire new sphere of communications with this book. Besides being exceptionally well-written, it is superbly emotionally satisfying and a joy to read. Every page is literally filled with nuggets of truth about story and the effect it plays on our human emotions and psyches. The story is the king of human communications. No wonder Jesus wrapped The Truth in story to be told as parables.
Amazingly Annette Simmons is herself a masterful student of story telling. The breadth of her references and her story examples come from the reality of using story to make the communications connection between humans. There is hope and joy to be obtained from reading this book that overcomes cynicism and the sense of victimhood which embellishes so many of our contemporary institutions.
I've read dozens of business books on leadership, communications, collaboration and the like. Personally I have found no equal to this amazing little book which is so humanly valuable. Following Mortimer Adler's advice on reading a book three times to extract all that is there, I have just finished my second reading and savor the experience of reading it again in the coming months.

Summary: Well written book - Bravo
Comment: Although I read about three books a week (over 120 per year) it is only once a year on average that I find one against which to lodge the following complaint. This book throws my reading schedule completely off track. When you find one that is so well written and so full of useful information you tend to slow down your reading speed to make sure that you don't miss anything important. What should have been a couple of hours to read ended up taking over a week as I read one part, digested it, then went back to read another one.
The text covers the most important story types to tell in order to exercise influence over others, gain credibility, etc. It also defines a story and how it can influence in ways that bare facts cannot, provides information on the psychology of how a story influences, and the important "dos and don'ts" of a storyteller. Annette Simmons provides multiple examples throughout the text so the reader understands how to apply the principles right away.
If you are studying storytelling, how to inspire others, how to influence others, how to change corporate culture, or any other aspect of change on a personal or organizational level then your education will be lacking if it does not include the information in this book. "The Story Factor" receives the highest recommendation that I can give.

Summary: Informative & Entertaining ... A Rare Combination
Comment: Finally, a management book that isn't filled with trite one sentence solutions to complicated problems. The author points out that in order to succeed, in business or life, other people must trust you and your goals. The way to exert influence and gain this trust is through opening up lines of communications via stories.
Everyone has a story to tell. With books, plays and movies people find stories intriguing because they reveal truths and emotions that are universal. Tapping into this universal appeal is the key to influencing others.
I found this book, with it's plethora of stories and examples, an excellent how-to guide. Not only are the stories entertaining, but they are arranged in 6 categories which allows the reader to easily apply them to specific situations. An interesting by-product is that I now listen more intently to other's stories and file them away in my mind for future reference. I have not only become a better communicator, I have become a better listener.
