Summary: The bible
Comment: I had the pleasure of attending the class that Jack Levin teaches at Univ. Chicago's law school where this book is the text book. I was surprised to find how readable the text is considering the complexity of the subject matter. Having read other texts on the subject, I can say that this is by far the most readable and accurate resource on these subjects. The front half of the book is the text the authors wrote and is organized from forming the company through making growth equity investments, LBOs, roll-ups, exit strategies and finally forming the PE fund. The latter half of the book contains excerpts of relevant SEC regs and IRS code as reference material for the topics covered in the first half of the book.
Even if you don't have time to read the whole text, it is a very easy to use reference for almost any issue that comes up in these types of transactions. If you are more on the M&A side, I also highly recommend the companion 3 book set titled "Mergers, Acquisitions, and Buyouts".
