Summary: A great read & a glimpse into the transforming power of art
Comment: This is a beautifully written, very accessible novel peopled with interesting, well-crafted characters from many cultures brought together unexpectedly. On one level, the novel is a page turner -- much like the old English murder mysteries where someone is found dead in the drawing room and no one can leave. In this case, it's not a whodunit, but who will survive -- a more fitting question for our world today. On another level, it's a fabel about the transforming power of art and the inherent goodness of people under the right circumstances. Some may find the story's love interests a little too "potential screenplay", but there is much to enjoy about this book regardless. More than any other novel, Bel Canto created for me an experience of opera, languages and cultures that has helped me better appreciate art and music in my own life. You don't have to be a music lover or love story devotee to be moved by this book. And, if you have the good fortune to be a classical music or opera buff, you'll probably like this novel even more than I did.

Summary: Beautiful Song
Comment: I thought Bel Canto might evolve into an oppressive hostage story, but instead, it is an amazing study of human beings, their universality, and idealized love- certainly a beautiful song. The set-up one can read on the book jacket: Paraphrased, people of various nationalities attend a birthday party for a Japanese techno tycoon who was enticed to attend because his favorite Diva was entertaining. A subversive group takes the entire party hostage, since the group was stymied and disappointed that the president of the Latin nation was not there to be kidnapped and held for political ransom. From this point, the story takes on a momentum of its own, unfolds in a most unusual way, not tumbling to the conclusion, but giving the reader time to savor the moments, the characters, and the writing. I will never again look at a linguist/translator in a casual way. A very "different" novel, easy to read, yet strikingly complex, Bel Canto is strongly recommended. I did not want it to end.
Re Bel Canto , I neglected to mention a couple of important points when I reiterated my enjoyment of the characters. The characters develop unlikely relationships among themselves and between themselves and some of the terrorists, and also, the necessity to establish unconventional routines and fill the time to adapt to the circumstances presents a most intriguing scenario. Unlikely? Perhaps. But perhaps not... My favorite of the summer of 2001.

Summary: Elements of humanity
Comment: This book was a gift from a friend because of my love of opera. Though the book contained the character of an opera singer, the elements of humanity in this day of terrorism and its influence in our world were brought into focus through the characters of those who sought to bring about a difference to the world in which we live. Opportunities to bond with people in desperate circumstances, to understand the talent and ability of people who have never had opportunity; this is the fiber that brings meaning to this story, even when you understand that there can be no alternative end. The writing style is uncomplicated, allowing your imagination to paint the images suggested within the pages. A good read with some thought provoking ideas. Not too complex.
