Summary: "Doctor" Lucy tries to give Charlie Brown some good advice
Comment: It is not surprising that Lucy Van Pelt is always giving people advice. After all, she is a know-it-all, who is perfectly willing to give advice to Linus and Schroeder even if she is not always getting five cents for dispensing advice from her psychiatric help booth. However, Charlie Brown is so wishy-washy that it seems like she will never be able to help him, but she sure tries to in this Ready-to-Read book based on the "Peanuts" comic strips of Charles M. Schulz. The problem is that "Lucy's Advice" is not that helpful. For example, at one point she suggests that what Charlie Brown needs is a dog. Of course, Snoopy takes exception to that remark. But no matter what Lucy says to him, Charlie Brown keeps coming back for more of her dubious advice.

"Lucy's Advice" is a Level 2 book, which emphasizes reading independently by offering more-complex stories, varied sentence structure, and paragraphs. There are nine scenes in this story as Charlie Brown keeps coming back for more advice from Lucy, so that there is an episodic nature to the story. The most surprising part of this story, adapted by Nancy Krulik with art by Peter and Nick LoBianco, is that at the end Lucy actually gives Charlie Brown a piece of good advice. For those of us who have been watching Charlie Brown end up flat on his back when trying to kick a football being held by Lucy, the idea that he could be smiling because of something she said was a surprising and refreshing change. This is one of many "Peanuts" Ready-to-Read books, so young readers will find more adventures of Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the gang after this one.
