Summary: After The War
Comment: Carol Matas's book After the War gives me a feel of what it was like to be a survivor of World War II. She does an excellant job of describing new things to us that were there back in the 1940s. This book is about a young girl whose reletives have all died in the war and so she decides to join an underground organization to transport Jewish children illegally to Palestine.

Summary: If you like War and Adventure u mite like this
Comment: I liked this book very much. If I could rate it 1-5, I would give it a definite five. It's very suspenseful war story filled with many narrow escapes. It is an awesome book. I would most likely love to read it repeatedly.
This book is about a girl named Ruth. During 1945-1948, after her entire family dies, she assumed that she was the only one who survived. Therefore, she sets off to get to a place where the Germans couldn't get any Jews. It was the land of Eretz, Israel. However, on the way she encounters many problems and challenges she must face to be free. She ends up meeting some boy name Zvi. She falls in love with him. On a boat about half way to Israel, she hears a familiar voice. It was her brother, Simon! She couldn't believe it. They were very happy to see each other but then she hits trouble. Many of her friends die during this escape. It's a great war and adventure book put together.
I would mostly recommend this book to girls because the main character is a girl. Even though the main character is a girl, I liked it and I'm a boy. So I guess if you are a boy and interested in war and adventure then you can read it too.

Summary: Engaging Story, but Weak Delivery
Comment: Ruth Mendenberg survives Auschwitz concentration camp, but has nothing to live for with the death of 80 family members. Then she meets Saul, a Zionist Brichah organizer, who sends her on an assignment that changes her life. She, along with a few other Zionist leaders, must take a group of 20 children from Poland to the new Palestine.
The simple writing style, while appropriate for a young audience, may bore older audiences. The book is written in the present tense which causes the author's voice to resemble journal entries. The reader must listen to the narrator summarize the story.
This exciting story will attract middle school students, but lacks the depth that older audiences require. The beginning of the story lacked conflict and character development. Ruth's meeting with the Zionist group is very shallow with, other than Nate, Miriam, and Saul, all the characters in the group dropping out of the story.
Other than the slow start and the inherent weakness of writing in the first person, I think After the War is a good read. It was an aspect of post WWII life I new nothing about.
