Summary: An engaging, yet difficult read
Comment: It's hard to rate this novel. I guess I enjoyed it, although the story was a bit hard to stomach at times. Roberta is quite a misfit, whose first person narrative shifts between events that took place five years ago and the present. Lynda Barry handles the shifts flawlessly; they all make sense. Five years ago, Roberta was on a cross country trip with her murdering father, who has her pretend she's a mentally deficient boy. Roberta recounts the horrors she witnesses with little emotion. In the present, 1971, Roberta is on another trip--this time on acid and various other drugs. She hangs out with a group of confused teenagers. I can't say this novel is a pleasure to read, but as I said, I did enjoy it. Roberta's experience evokes the discomfort, the "what am I doing here" sense that I think most teens have. It's just that Roberta's life is so far from what most teenagers have lived through. I don't think this book is for everyone, but if the story appeals to you, then it will be an good read. Barry writes quite well and the book really is a fairly quick read.

Summary: sharp and brilliant like a knife: her best work to date
Comment: I have loved Lynda Barry's imaginative and yet so-true voice and vision since the 80's. This is possibly the best book I've read in a year. The story is dark and dream-like, much like a David Lynch film told from a child's perspective. In contrast, it isn't bleak, but profound and rich in narrative language with expertly woven prose. Incredibly inspiring to me as an artist to see Lynda Barry grow so dramatically as a writer and a story teller. She has come into her own. Despite its dark content, I didn't want to put this book down. A very moving book.

Summary: Devasting . . .
Comment: This is a very difficult book to put down or soon forget. I've read a lot of ugly things in my life but this book touches on a deeper level because of this young child's age and the horrors she endures daily in her truly "cruddy" life. If it weren't so darned sad when thought about it'd be almost funny. Wish this book had been around when I was 14 or so and my own life may not have looked quite so bleak to me after having read it. The author has a knack for digging into an adolescent's mind and really brings that painful period of time of young adulthood (those ugly years when one is 13 - 17) alive in a brilliantly, devastating way.
The cruelties continue to the very last page. Somehow I wasn't left feeling depressed but actually relieved at the eventual outcome. I can't say it was an altogether enjoyable reading experience, although I did laugh out loud a few times, but I sure couldn't stop turning the pages. The illustrations completely capture the feel of the book. Recommended to the strong of stomach.
