Summary: MANY UPGRADING GISTS; NOTHING ABOUT FIXING PCs
Comment: This book is strictly for beginners. It is well-organized, and offered test-questions at the end of each chapter. Every upgrading gist a beginner should know was included. But contrary to its name, there is not even a single chapter which discussed how to fix an ailing PC.
Also, the user-level of this book compares to what "For Dummies" series offer. Thus, if you are not a real beginner, there is little to gain by acquiring it. However, if you are indeed a beginner, I must do about-turn, and say that it is worth spending on. Its style of handling hardware may appeal to you.

Summary: Great book. Got my money's worth
Comment: I read the first reviewer's overviews for this book and decided not to purchase it, but I also went to a local bookstore and browse thru it myself. So, I came home and purchased the book from Amazon.com. The reviewer doesn't make a modicum of sense. This is a beginner's book; it's enough to get you started. It's not going to get you an A+ Certification. As it stated and you can see from its price this book is not going to tell you the full sequential mechanism of how an exe file is executed because this is not what you're buying. You are buy a simple and easy to read book with pictures and step by step simple instruction to tell you how to upgrade and repair your pc, and this book did just that. For a low price of 19.95 you are getting a bargain. I had to pay almost $100.00 for a hard drive cable problem. If you have this book you can do it for as little as $5.00. I read the book and upgraded my 16X IDE CD to a 48X CD without any problem. I upgraded my video card, modem and sound card for as little as $80.00. If you are an advance user this book is not for you, but if you just want to know a little about computer upgrade and repairs you will get your money worth. You will be able to correct at least some of your computer software problems and 95% of your computer hardware problems. The first reviewer is like a person who went to McDonald's and ordered a .59 hamburger and expects a prime cut of filet. This is just not going to happen. Try taking an A+ certification class and you will find out that it costs you $600.00, and the book will cost you at least $100.00. Why is that? Let say you just turn on your computer and nothing comes on your screen, and it beeps 5 times. What does that tell you? This book will tell you what the problem is so you can correct it with a low price of less than a $100.00. This same problem will cost you almost $300 from a repair store, and they (service men) also know one thing you know 5 beeps, but instead of paying 100 you are paying 300. It, however, is not going to tell you why it beeps 5 times and the reason behind each beep. I can tell you by the time you finish with this book you will be able to upgrade and repair your computer without fully understanding how it works. Beeps 8 times, change the video card with just one screw and a 20-dollar card. Do you need to know the reason behind each little bit and bytes? This book is like you are flipping a light switch and nothing comes on and it will tell you how to change a light bulb, but it won't go into detail with all the boring stuff you don't need to know to change one. The first reviewer need to give it at least a 4 stars because this book does what it said it would do. It didn't tell you that a thousand-homunculus carry information from the CPU to your computer screen or should I say CRT just in case he emails me and ask me the different a computer screen and a monitor. :) It's really not a bad book. As an every day Joe it's good enough for me.
