Summary: Space travel has never been safe
Comment: I was given this book many years ago while in elementary school. I re-read it in college while doing research for a term paper.

Richard Lewis gives a thorough history of the space program in the 1960's starting with the Mercury program, on to the Gemini program and finalizing with the Apollo program's finest success, landing a man on the moon.

Mr Lewis gives a detailed enginner's eye view of many of the issues that faced NASA while trying to meet President Kennedy's proclamation that the US would land a man on the moon, and bring them home safe.

It has been nearly twenty years since I first read this book, but still remember the chapter titled, "Fire in the Cockpit". How many of us can say that we not only remember an item from a book we read 20+ years ago, let alone the chapter title as well? It was riveting.

I was watching the movie Armegeddon the other day and they have a scene at the Kennedy Space Center where they show a plaque memorializing the astronauts of Apollo 1. The Fire in the Cockpit chapter dealt with those astronauts and how the gave their lives.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for information on the men and women in and around NASA during the Space Race.
