Summary: Best new author of 2004
Comment: After reading 1984 for the first time a few years ago, I found the prospect of some sort of continuation intriguing. But the love lost between Winston and Julia in that story could not prepare me for what unfolded between the front and back covers of 2084. If ever there was a story about anti-utpoian societies this is it. But to make matters worse - it's our society. I have tried my best to convince myself that this story is purely fiction, but I find it difficult to do so with what I see going on in this country today.

On the surface everything appears to be perfect - maybe too perfect. The characters we meet are ordinary citizens with very little concerns. Like identical cogs in a wheel of perpetual motion, Jonn and Tina have no real reason to wonder where they are headed in life. Everything has been taken care of for them. They were born into a society where crime no longer exists - a society where everyone is educated, and everyone is truly equal.

The Citizen's Protective Services are entrusted with maintaining order in the 'public domain' and they do their job exceedingly well (this is Big Brother in overdrive). But everything begins with F.O.C.S. (For Our Children's Survival) as Jonn and Tina know all too well. They and the two generations before them have never known anything else. 'Families' no longer exist. Bonding is an 'illness'. Everyone knows that - and at least up to this point, so do Jonn and Tina. In less than one month, it's their turn to say good-bye to their little boy so he will receive all that is needed to grow up 'normal'.

You never know which way this story is going to lead, or what emotion will suddenly overtake you. One thing is for sure - you will never forget it. And you will never forget Jonn and Tina, or Timmy.

Summary: Finally, something new
Comment: This book will touch a primal nerve in every parent, or anyone thinking of having a family in today's society. I found it quite by accident, and if forecasting the future for our children by the standards - or the diminishing lack of standards we're accustomed to is possible then this book has done it. The author has managed to solve not only the problems of homeland security and our country's educational system, but also welfare and much, much more. He has shown the government's abiliy to encroach on our liberties beyond the trivialities of today, and to do it with our blessings - yet none of this book reads lie a political novel. All of this is accomplished in a truly believable and very readable story. (never once did I need a dictionary) Every page pulls the reader deeper into the everyday life of Jonn, Tina and little Timmy - a life that is considered 'normal'in 2084. George Orwell tried to convince us - but if you start with the children - you will have a 'Mental evolution" Big Brother truly lives in 2084.
I know it's fictional, but everything about this story has led me to believe that this is the course our country is on. There is a high price to pay for 'free gifts'.
My biggest fear is that some influential politician will read it. If that happens - God help the children.
However many stars you have - this book deserves one more.
