Summary: Not what I expected
Comment: I bought this on Amazon's UK website when I was out of the country (U.S.). I was homesick for New York stories, and I thought this book would be like the Gangs of New York movie. In a way it is because it is about the brutal lives of the people in the Five Points neighborhood.

What is different is that while there is much violence, there is also much hope. Many of the characters survive long enough to even get out of that horrible place. It is not just the violence they survive; it is also disease. A cholera epidemic kills many people in the last chapter. Again, while it was sad, there was strength of characters.

This is an interesting book with many unique characters. (I wish I had read more of the advertisement on the Amazon UK page because I did not realize that this was a sequel, although the title should have told me. I will now pick up the first book.) I enjoyed the characters, especially the strong women! Hell-Cat Jane and Brigehd (sp?) were tough! I recommend this book!
