Summary: Blurred Line Between Fact and Fiction
Comment: Too often when facts are fictionalized the writer misses the boat. He or she either burdens the reader with a rehash of the actual events ad nauseam, or dramatizes them to the point of incredulity. In "The ProCon Conspiracy", Mitchell does neither. He strikes a superb balance of documenting the facts with just enough dramatic license to move the story forward and keep it interesting. Even for readers who already know the outcome, this story is so well told they will want to read the next page. And the one after that. Based on the machinations in the Reagan White House during the Iran-Contra Scandal, "Procon..." reveals a rogue's gallery of seedy characters who thrived on bending or ignoring existing laws to have their way. For example, during a heated argument about whether to proceed with Operation Project Convalesce (ProCon), the fictional president snaps, "I'll do damn near anything to get those hostages released. Even if means bending an asinine law or two. It's time to fish or cut bait." He was referring to the American and Allied hostages being held by Iranian terrorists in Beirut, Lebanon. The book exposes the illicit plan, its principal architect and supporters, and the two National Security Council members who opposed it. The book strays conveniently away from the facts when the sitting president resigns, succeeded by his inept vice president. As in the two following books that completed the trilogy, Mitchell shows us two different sides of the CIA, particularly the corrupt Director who originated the illegal plot, and the "good guys" who ultimately expose it and bring the criminals to justice. Some of these same characters are reprised in the second book, "The Pro Patria Project." "ProCon..." is a treat for any reader who enjoys cloak and dagger intrigue, counter-intelligence operations, and spy vs. spy drama.
