Summary: c'mon baby, do the hillbilly twist
Comment: the twist is more than a song or a dance. as mr. dawson illustrates in this book, it was a full-fledged american institution (and a worldwide one, too). before the beatles got here, it was THEE thing in pop music...as much as boy bands and hyper-sexualized teenage girls are today.
the book is entertaining and well-written. dawson has some very definite opinions, and most of them are very concise and amusing. this is not a book that should be looked upon as serious academic musicology, but it does tell an engaging story of how a particular song came to evolve into an all-consuming fad that stretched across every level of american society. the text is very well-researched, both from contemporary early 60s accounts and from subsequent writings. it's obvious that mr. dawson spent a long time tracking down just about every last thing that was available.
in short, read this book. if you're interested in the history of early 60s r&b and pop, you won't be disappointed.
