Summary: Very thoroughly researched novel - A delightful surprise!
Comment: I've haven't read any of the other Grisham novels, but when I heard what this one was about, I decided to give it a try - and was delightfully surprised! As a Christian, I am used to Christianity often being ridiculed in secular novels. Not so with this one.
Nate O'Riley, a twice-divorced alcoholic right out of rehab, must find Rachel Lane, a Christian missionary nobody seems to know, amongst the Indians in the Pantanal of Brazil. Almost like finding a needle in a haystack. The reason: Rachel has become single heir to the tenth largest fortune in the world! The encounter is destined to change both their lives forever.
Contrary to some of the other opinions here on the site, I find the ending perfect. John Grisham knew exactly what he was doing, and if they make a movie out of this book, I hope they don't change it. What absolutely startled me, but in a very positive way, was the grasp that John Grisham seems to have of Christianity and Christian missions. He seems to have received much of his information from Carl King, a Baptist missionary friend of his that lives in Campo Grande and has actually taken Grisham into the Pantanal. Finally a bestselling author who really knows what he's talking about (at least regarding information on various aspects of religion)!
So if you're looking for some food for your soul and a possible way of changing your life's perspectives, read this novel! And to John Grisham: keep up the good work!

Summary: A fast read with good characterizations.
Comment: Tory Phelan has 3 ex-wives, 6 disagreeable children and 11 billion dollars. In a surprise move, he jumps out of a 14th story window leaving his fortune to Rachel Lane, his illegitimate daughter no one even knew about. His family has no idea at first what's in the will and already begins to spend the money on the day of his death.
Rachel is a missionary somewhere in the remote jungles of Brazil. It is up to Nate O'Reilly to find her. He has just been released from his 4th try at a rehab clinic. His life is in shatters. The IRS is after him, his children are estranged, he still wants to drink and he's very disillusioned with being a lawyer.
His trip to Brazil is a real eye-opening experience for him. He learns the meaning of friendship, survival and sacrifice. When he does find Rachel, another problem presents itself. When he goes back home, will he be able to hold on to the self-respect he is starting to gain when he's drawn back into court to protect her rights against an unlikeable family and unscrupulous lawyers?
Nate is a very sympathetic character and you will find yourself rooting for him on his voyage of self-discovery.

Summary: An easy read.
Comment: I give this book 5 stars for a somewhat superficial reason: I found it entertaining. It was my first Grisham novel and a breath of fresh air from some heavier readings I've had. It is a page turner and the book was over before I knew it.
It starts with the mystery surrounding the old man working up his will and it gives you the thirst to find out why his family deserves his malicious intent. From there, the main characters perils in the amazon are abundant, and again, you find yourself frantically flipping pages to see "what happens next".
It fell short for a bit during his encounter with the pastor of the church once back in the states, but it wasn't significant enough to knock a star off the rating.
I appreciate Grisham weaving in the personal battles that Nate deals with in his turbulent life , all the while embarking on his biggest challenge yet, which of course, turns out to be an epiphany.
This book was easy to follow and enjoyable to the very end. And I look forward to my next Grisham book.
