Summary: Poignant story of the birth of a nation
Comment: Not a long time ago I heard someone say that we all carry a bit of the Jews inside of us. Maybe it is because of the history the Bible gives us, maybe because we've all experienced rejection and affection in some extreme way or another at some point in our lives. Exodus is the story of the birth of Israel. It is the story of the most ancient of creeds on this earth. It is a story of persecussion, hatred, fear, victory and murder. It is, in fact, the story of the Jewish people, told both from the viewpoint of fact and fiction. The characters in the novel are fictitious, the events are not. It is the story of an Israeli leader by the name of Ari Ben Cannan, and an American nurse - Kitty Fremont - who refuses to be drawn to the "Promised Land" but in the end cannot escape from it because... well, to tell more would be to almost give away part of the novel.
To read this book is not only interesting - it is even vital, I should say. It helps us understand a bit more about the philosophies and the rivalries that have plagued the Middle East since the begginings of time. For us westeners (especially the non-jews like me), this way of thinking, of fighting, is unheard of. Holy Wars? Live and die for the future generations without regard for one's own life? Western capitalism will be shocked at the idea. We all know the story of the Jewish people is one of sorrow, but I doubt we even dare to imagine just how deep this sorrow is. Uris' work leads us through as invisible onlookers to a world where there is no tomorrow but only today. His mix of fact and fiction is what really makes this novel gripping. Sometimes it could get a bit confusing when he resorts to just re-telling of historical events; since Uris is above all else a journalist and this reflects in his writing. For people like myself, who were still not around in the fifties, at times like these the story gets too deep, with names and events popping-up everywhere. But as soon as the focus gets changed to the characters again, you will want to get to the end of the book as soon as your eyes allow. "Exodus" is a novel to remember and re-read a few years down the road; and never forget it.

Summary: Brilliant! A perfect read!
Comment: Exodus was one of the best books I have ever read. It tells of the plight of the Jewish people, and calms any prejudice you might hold. Bringing love, hatred and sadness into one strong piece of historical fiction, Leon Uris stuns the world with his insight and vision on this difficult topic. People in today's world forget how difficult it was to establish the State of Israel. While reading this book, you establish fundamental views toward the Jewish people, and a respect for their determination and faith. Uris has gotten under the skin of Israel and into the hearts of millions. Through living characters, and intense emotions, Uris shows you just what it takes to be a man of faith. This book holds an accurate view on past events that should not be passed up. It is a read for teens to adults, and when you are through, you will have gained far more knowledge than you had before.

Summary: A glimpse of Israel past
Comment: The book Exodus is a fabulous introductory text about the history of the founding of the state of Israel. It tells the story of the people and places that made Israel what it is today. Leon Uris weaves several amazing stories into a historical fiction with some of the most descriptive, evocative literature ever written.
Exodus is not a story of only one person. Uris was able to interlace the stories of several different characters into a common time and place while still developing each character very well. The novel itself, was surprisingly accurate, almost every event mentioned occurred when it was listed and happened as Uris described it. Maybe that's why Uris himself spent years researching his tale.
I particularly liked the book for several reasons. First, Mr. Uris wrote the book from the standpoint of several different characters, which allows the reader to develop several different opinions about the events taking place. Second, because there are so many characters, there are more heart stopping moments, moments when you laugh or cry. Finally, Leon Uris' imagination allowed for the characters within the story of Israel have a story all there own which is at least as heart pounding as the story of their homeland.
Exodus is truly a must read for those who know little about the foundation of the modern state of Israel and would like to learn more. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
