Summary: The Bible and The Piano
Comment: I was extremely disappointed. I had expected a spoken version of the New Testament. Instead, I got not only a spoken version but a spoken version with a piano or some other instrument/s playing in the background. It was very distracting, for example, to listen to the crucifixion in Mark's gospel with a piano banging away. It would be nice if there were some way to mute out the "music".

Summary: An excellent companion to the Holy Scriptures
Comment: I spent a lot of time looking for a good Bible on tape. This is the only good modern translation of an audio recorded Bible that I have discovered, so far, on tape. Unfortunately, the World Bible Publishing recording does not include the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament).
I am a Roman Catholic Christian; therefore, I was not interested in the KJV translation that is frequently in use for bibles on tape. I am not saying that the KJV does not have any value. I am saying, however, that the KJV is an archaic translation that is difficult to hear and understand for most people in the contemporary world, and it is not of interest to a great majority of Catholics.
I would recommend this tape series to anybody who would like to listen to the New Testament driving in a car, traveling on a plane, or taking a stroll through the park.
The readers on the tape speak quickly and clearly. You will not be able to study the Bible in any great depth through this format, but it is good for gaining better familiarity with the biblical text and excellent for devotional purposes. If you want to do Lectio Divina, it is better to have a printed bible.
The New Testament, in large part, is to be read by a lector and listened to by a hearer or assembly. This provides that dynamic. The presence of background music might relax you or annoy you.
If you are sensitive to gender inclusivity, it would be good to note that there are male and female voices on the tape. The NRSV translation is highly regarded for gender inclusivity. (I am not endorsing the NRSV as the best translation of the Bible.)
It would be better to have the recording on CD tracks. Check to see if they offer this recording on CD.
The tapes come in a flimsy cardboard box that is delicate. If you buy these tapes, it would be advisable to get audiocassette cases for the individual tapes.

Summary: A well done recording of the NRSV New Testament
Comment: I have used this edition of the New Testament on Cassette for over 5 years now, and still enjoy it, it is a clearly read edition with male and female readers (although there are a still a majority of it read by male voices), with background music... The NRSV like any translation has it's defects but it is without a doubt the best translation avaible today... With is't removal of archaic words, and gender incluvise language throughout the text (although God is still alway refered to in the masculine gender)... This NT provides the ability to absorb the Bible the way it was meant to be, listen to read aloud. The NRSV was begun to develope a literal translation that would become the standard for the 21st century....and while we cannot know what the feature holds it has well become the standard for this last years of the 20th...my only complaint was the fact it came in a cardboard box rather than a more durable vinyl case. I hope that soon World might get around to putting this edition on Compact Disc.
