Comment: This book bridges the gap between technical scientific literature and simple public educational materials. It provides a comprehensive macro view of the disease, beginning with the history and origins of AIDS, and ending with a look at the ethical issues the disease raises and the outlook for the future. The author, a senior clinical virologist, explains what AIDS is, how it manifests itself, and how it can and cannot be transmitted. The sections on anti-AIDS drugs and the AIDS vaccine are dated as the book was written in 1994, nonetheless the book provides a valuable look at the disease and its health and social ramifications.
