Summary: Time-travelling cops
Comment: As always, I enjoyed Mr. Griffin's work immensely, but he needs to get an editor who has read his other works (at least the ones in the same series) and will catch inconsistancies from one book to the next. In the Blood and Honor series for example the estancia Santa Catalina became Santo Catalina in the 3rd book- Saints' genders don't change in spanish. The most glaring anachronism orrurs in this novel, however. In the first book of the series the timeline is fixed by the heroine's 6yr old '67 Caddy - 1973, making Matt Payne about 2 years younger than me. In The Murderers, the timeline is again fixed by the interview of detective Milham occurring in 1975. With this novel, we are brought to the 21st century complete to laptops, cell phones and a Buick Rendezvous for Mickey, but amazingly Mickey is STILL in his late 30s and although I'm in my 50s, Matt is not, nor is Peter Wohl. I suppose it's hard to keep time lines straight when you're writing several series at the same time. A great read, but the time shift kept nagging as I read it making me wonder if my memory of the timeline in the rest of the series was off, so I went back and reread the others to be sure. An editor who was familiar with the rest of the series should've caught the wrinkle in the space-time continuum.

Summary: More of the same from Mr. Griffin
Comment: I started reading his Badge of Honor series very late in the game and finally did get them all. This is generally very well written and enjoyable for a quick read. Much like eating a dessert, it tastes great but won't fill you up. If you read the early books in this series you can tell that he started this in the late Sixties or early Seventies and it sat in a desk drawer until he became more famous. My main complaint is that in all of his series you have "Scions" of wealthy families doing something their peers never would. Be it a Marine, Army Officer or Policeman. Is there any real difference between Matthew Payne of Badge of Honor, Pick Pickering or his Father Fleming Pickering of the The Corp and Lowell Craig of The Brotherhood of War??? He really needs a new series or try to write some self contianed novels where nobody is a Scion, whose family owns most of Battery Park, the most successful law firm in Philadelphia or a shipping fleet and airline. For those who have read all of the series you know which is which.

Summary: Really good Police story
Comment: This is volume 8 of "The Badge of Honor" series, my introduction to the characters and a great beginning for me to another genre of murder-mystery books. Mr Griffin is meticulous in his descriptions of police methods and proceedures which I found to be fascinating as it gives another dimension to police work in general. The hero, Sergeant Matt Payne, the university educated scion of a wealthy Philadelphia family, is promoted to the Homicide division where, despite his youth and relative inexperience, he proves to be a first class cop and is obviously on his way to becoming a public hero. The ending is a bit of a cliff-hanger as our hero and his friend, Pulitzer prize winning journalist Mickey O'Hara, see to the extradition of a well known and long sought crook from Paris, back to Philadelphia. I hope that it isn't too long before the new book appears.
