Comment: Robert Laurance's 'Going Freelance' in many ways is a very helpful book for anyone working for someone else who thinks they could probably do better working freelance. One of the first questions anyone should ask when considering freelance work is "Do I know exactly what I'm about to embark upon?" This book spells it out for you. To go freelance, you should consider:
Am I doing this short term or long term?
Can I really handle being my own boss?
Can I handle my own financial affairs?
Do I understand the tax implications of freelancing?
Can I find clients and keep them?
Am I prepared to deal legally with clients who don't pay their bills?
Freelancing has lots of advantages (you are your own boss, you make your own hours, etc.), but readers will have the full story after reading this book.
The book has two drawbacks. First, the book was published in 1988. I don't know enough about what has changed in the tax system since then, but I suspect a lot of things are now different. Second, while a lot of the information in the book is very helpful, a lot of it is common sense. "You'll need to organize your desktop so that the most important items are within easy reach," is just one example of many things mentioned in the book that most of us already know. Even so, 'Going Freelance' is a helpful general source of information to help those thinking about freelancing get started before investigating the details of freelancing in your particular field.
