Summary: Simply not on a par with other HTML books.
Comment: Although the book claims to focus on many other things beyond HTML, there's really not much substance beyond the coverage of HTML basics. There's only a single beginner chapter on CGI that doesn't really teach you much at all. Buy the book because you are looking for a book on the bare basics of HTML for a begginner and not because you need help with CGI or other Web stuff. For great coverage of HTML AND other Web technologies, you should definitely take a look at the professional reference edition of a book called Web Publishing Unleashed, which is in my humble opinion a much better choice and a much better value for your money

Summary: My career started with this book
Comment: When I started to learn Web programming, I was overwhelmed by the sources of HTML guide. Fortunately I found this book. Unlike some other HTML scripters, I read this book from cover to cover memorizing almost all tags/attributes as if a teacher would give me a quiz the second day. Thanks to its clear description, I could remember most I memorized. Today I'm a professional Web programmer doing mostly Perl/CGI, Javascript and Apache administration. I owe a lot to Ian Graham. I constantly recommend this book to others who wish to learn HTML.

Summary: Excellent reference book--well organized
Comment: As the title suggests, this is a guide to HTML and related areas. Graham presents the material lucidly and in an organized fashion. The book dosn't purport to provide you with the secret to having a killer home-page as some other commentators onh this book seem to suggest it would or should--if you are looking for a guide to HTML CGI and the ins and outs of how the HTTP environment operates then this is a definite book to get
