Summary: Will the real inspiration please stand up...
Comment: Larry Brooks has crafted a tale about a major marketing corporation, and a suddenly "Zen" CEO, who, sensing the writing on the wall, gives a challenge to his three replacement front-runners: attend "The Seminar" he had also attended, and the winner will be his replacement. With the stakes now set, the three head off to a secluded Northern California ranch, only to find themselves in the middle of a huge mind game.
Brooks is a gifted writer -- his characters are very real, his pacing is perfect, and the payoff is well worth it. So why have I given it only four stars? Well, for the feeling that we have been here before. About midway through, as the twists and turns of the plot lead the reader around by the nose, I was reminded of the movie "The Game" with Michael Douglas and Sean Penn. In that movie, as in this book, you never know if it is a game, or real. Are the participants real, or an actor playing a role? Since that movie was a very good one, this book's grafting of that plot point is not a bad decision. And, Brooks gets points for originality as he expands that notion and ends the book with a wicked twist played out in the last few chapters. It is just that time and again, I felt detached from the action, knowing the course this was taking as it followed the concept of the movie. Still, it is a very good book, and the surprise at the end made me want to reread the book to pick up the clues Brooks had left. So, ultimately, it did its job. Bottom line? Pick it up!

Summary: A seminar to die for...
Comment: Start the coffeemaker; you'll be up all night reading this page-turner. From the first paragraph to the last sentence, Brooks keeps the reader wondering which characters -- if any -- will ultimately survive "The Seminar," a secretive retreat aimed at executives needing a shot of self-awareness.
A trio of ad agency managers are coerced into attending "The Seminar" by a boss with an unusual motive. The threesome have their own reasons for attending the retreat, but they quickly realize soul-searching can mean deadly discoveries.
Brad, Mark and Pamela -- the characters who launch this roller coaster plot -- are not typical mystery/thriller stereotypes. They're frightening real people. You'll find yourself wondering who can be trusted, and who would kill to cover up a trail of lies.
Don't cheat and read the last page. The twists and turns that drive this book will throw you a curve long after you ponder the last sentence.
If psychological thrillers without cliches are your cup of tea, then hustle out and grab this one. It's a fast-paced and satisfying read.

Summary: Super-Exciting Office Thriller
Comment: Super-exciting office thriller about three partners, at odds, who are forced to go on a week-long seminar retreat together in a remote Oregon location. The characters are partners in an advertising agency. Brooks is uniquely qualified to write this book, having spent twenty-one years in advertising before becoming a writer.
I read the entire book in one day, finishing after midnight, just because I couldn't put the book down. The twist at the end was unexpected, and caught me completely by surprise. I plan to read more of Larry Brooks.
