Summary: Drivel!
Comment: Absolute Drivel! This novel tells the story of an heiress, Miss Susanna Chadwick, that runs away from her evil uncle and ends up stranded at the home of an impoverished Baron Lindale. In less than a week she decides to marry the baron, and he decides to marry her and both "fall in love."

There is absolutely no chemistry between the hero and heroine. In fact, I cannot even determine how they fell in love on such short acquaintance. Then to compound matters, the heroine vacillates between marrying the hero. I will marry him, no I won't marry him, yes, I will, etc... It is the worst farce. The only saving grace to this whole book, is that Ms. McRae writes well, even if the content of her book is awful. She has written better novels. Save your money and don't buy this one.

Summary: Not a genuine regency...
Comment: What a dreary read! After reading the back cover and the first few pages, I decided to give the book a try. Unfortunately, the lack of character development and plodding plot made the rest of the book quite disappointing.

Susanna and Gareth hardly spend any time together until the last half of the book, yet both have "decided" that they are in love and wish to marry the other? It was very unbelievable to have two characters display these sentiments when they didn't even think these things about each other. They simply had no chemistry and it was pretty obvious to me as the reader. The descriptions are tepid at best; you never get a strong feel for the characters and the ending was hurried and contrived. There are very few characters throughout the book and it takes place in an isolated castle until the last 50 pages, when it is suddenly overrun with people--just not realistic.

Another problem with the book is that although it is a "regency" romance, it doesn't have much to do with the regency aspect. The social scenes that are usually such a delight in many regency novels are completely absent here. Manners and etiquette are quite unimportant in this book; for example, it apparently makes no difference that Susanna is a young woman alone with three men whom she does not know.

All of these issues lead me to say that this was not a true regency romance.

Summary: Miss Chadwick's Champion
Comment: Life for heiress Samantha Chadwick is not a picnic. She has to marry before her next birthday or loose her inheiritance. When her dastardly cousin tries to force her into marriage, she escapes after conking him on the head. Running through the dales of Yorkshire, she comes upon a crumbling castle belonging to Lord Lindale. Tired of being courted for her money, she pretends to be suffering from amnesia, and seeks the protection of the Stavely family.

Gareth Stavely, the Sixteenth Baron Lindale is facing problems of his own. He has very little money, his home is falling apart and his brother Gawaine has just run up more gambling debts. The Stavely family is in danger of losing their home. What they need is for some obliging heiress to drop into their laps and rescue them. Soon the brothers discover that Samantha is an heiress and set up a kind of competition to see who will win her heart and hand. Can true love blossom with all this deception?

Strangely, I found myself unable to get involved with this story. Gareth Stavely is exactly the kind of regency hero that I most appreciate. A kind, responsible and thoughtful young man rather than the arrogant supercilious woman-haters we usually get. So I was really disappointed that I found myself feeling rather bored with Gareth and Samantha. Very, very disappointing.
