Summary: A Delightful Departure for The Legal Beagle
Comment: Bleachers is John Grisham's second departure from the legal genre and in it, he produces a wonderful, homespun, yet complicated story about a town that takes their football a little too seriously.

At first glance, this book seems a departure for Grisham. There are no corporate fat cats, no pragmatic laywer heroes, no high-stakes, big money, accounts-in-the-Caymans courtroom dramas. And yet, what remains of Grisham is the heart and soul of all of his literature, what makes him an endearing staple for his fans: rich character development.

Eddie Rake is a well-developed, southern, take-no-prisoners football coach who has left a mark on a tiny town. The other characters are rich and full, with regrets, imbedded memories, and a sense of belonging to a tight football fraternity.

Bleachers is a welcome read, a delightful piece of literature, especially for those who have at one time played competitive team sports. The dialogue between formerly ego-centric, hard-hitting alpha males brought back my own memories of playing on our high-school basketball team.

I also thought this book was very similar to another wonderful tale by another best-selling author, Jerry Jenkins. Hometown Legend has similar plotlines, developed around the unique passion of southern high-school football.

I applaud Grisham for reaching beyond his legal niche and producing a delightful read. Go get this book and put it on your nightstand today.

Summary: A Lookback at High School Football Memories
Comment: Like many readers, I wait expectantly for another John Grisham book. This one is (alas!) another departure from his thrilling fiction involving lawyers. If you are a fan of John Grisham, you will appreciate his attempts to vary his material and keep reading!

I read this book in just a couple hours. There are some surprises of course as this author is known for luring us on to read until the end. Place yourself back in high school, remembering the football team and how important it is to most small towns especially. Winning at any cost is the aim of the coach in this story. The star quarterback and other members of a football team meet many years later at the funeral of their coach and relate stories of their lives since high school.

You may experience, as I did, your own high school memories as you read this book through the eyes of athletes. My own small town had a coach with a winning football streak through several years and my town worshipped him with a new car and other perks similar to the way this town and this coach in the story are depicted.

I recommend this book as a nice diversion. It leaves much to the imagination. It contains a lot of truth and insights. You can trust John Grisham to write stories we can think about later and relate to them. I liked it.

Summary: Not at all what we've come to expect from Grisham
Comment: "Bleachers" is, ostensibly, a story of a has-been football hero's return to the hometown he has disowned for the funeral of the football coach he despised. I say ostensibly because it's not actually a story of all. Rather, it's a collection of fictional football anecdotes with a few diversions tossed in to disguise the lack of an actual plot line and character development.

The majority of the book's "action" takes place on the bleachers at Rake Field, named after the legendary coach of the Messina High School Spartans, Eddie Rake. Rake's former players, all in town for his funeral, gather there to share beer and relive old times while waiting for him to finally die. From time to time they go off into town to eat or visit old friends (at one point, the book's central character, Neely Crenshaw, meets with an old girlfriend to beg for her forgiveness for him dumping her years earlier), and Coach Rake's funeral takes up the last chapter or so, but for the most part the book is simply anecdotes. The supposed plot is thin and worthless--it's merely a vehicle for the anecdotes.
