Rating: 5
Summary: action galore
Comment: I get bored easily with books filled with characters that do nothing but sit around and talk and talk half of the book. This is not one of Keith Douglass's problems. His characters do not do any more talking then necessary to keep the plot moving along. His novels will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen next and if the team will manage to bring off the planed operation. His writing is a pure delight with the correct mix of dialog and narration, not too little and not too much. Keith Douglass will keep you up at night wondering how in the world the team will manage the stunt. You will feel as if you are going into battle with Murdock and the rest of the gang. My only beef here is that Douglass gets a bit too caught up with the titles - Gunner's Mate Second Class - cut out the titles and just go with the man's name.

Summary: What a disappointment!
Comment: In what has to be one of the most far-fetched plots of any recent novel I have read, a platoon of SEALs single-handedly averts the invasion of Taiwan. Even suspending disbelief for the purposes of a quick read, I was disappointed in the poor writing. One of the most annoying things was LT Murdock explaining to his men the very weapons they would use: "This is a Macmillan sniper rifle. It's .50 caliber and fires five rounds from a magazine. Heavy, yes, but..." They've never seen the weapons before? It would have been better to simply identify the weapon and then have it described in text rather than dialogue. Also annoying was the frequent referral to fragmentation grenades as "fraggers." Give me a break. This was like a comic book without pictures. In fact, it is such a disappointment that I even wonder if Douglass really wrote it as the other books in the series are rather good. Is it possible that there is a stable of writers out there cranking this series out under the Douglass pen-name? Anyway, if you were thinking of reading this series, please don't judge all the books by this very poor one.
