Summary: Unsubstantiated and Silly
Comment: "Parkinson's Law" is a classic (albeit far too too padded for the insights it provides). "The Law and the Profits" uses the ruse of humor to present a succession of unsubstantiated, factually wrong, statements. For example, while it is true that wars do indeed drive major increases in government revenues and expenditures, it is false that neither shrink with the resumption of peace. On the historical data, this statement is verifiably false. Parkinson argues that there is no correspondence between tax revenues and level of service, assuming his readers will be inclined to agree with him a priori; yet he elsewhere argues that certain functions cannot be taken on by the state because they are too expensive to perform (which contradicts his initial premise). Finally, in cases where he has a point, his arguments are very poorly organized and ineffective.

One is certainly welcome to make a serious point with satire--Parkinson did a superb job with his first book--but this specimen of his consists of a tissue of entirely false notions "documented" with story-pictures that collapse under mountains of snideness. Something went terribly wrong between "Parkinson's Law" and this one.

Summary: Must be read to KNOW why the US is in trouble.
Comment: I must admit that I read the first edition over 10 years ago. The impression I got was enough to change my entire political beliefs. This book studies the real effect of taxation on the people in any country. The question of why governments fail have always puzzled political scientist. Prof. Parkinson takes a historical/politic/financial look at this question. This book is not presented in a 'techincal' format but rather in a clear a-b-c prose veiw of what is important.
