Summary: Empowered Woman Outwits Dragons, Feeds 100 Children
Comment: Both the story itself and the delicious, vibrant, and rich illustrations are superb. Story is about a couple having been suddenly blessed with 100 children and now needing to feed them. Alexandra takes action and makes a deal with the local shepard whereby she will scare away the sheep-stealing dragon forever. She cleverly tricks this dragon and his "momma" and by the end they are quite scared of HER and even pay her handsomely to leave them alone forever. The dragons are tenderly illustrated as to be large yet endearingly adorable and not actually scary. Just enough suspense without scariness. This book is fun, empowering, and fear-conquering for kids, and just gorgeously illustrated. Note there is one illustration that could scare some younger readers (dragon with a sheep in its mouth), otherwise I would recommend this for ages 4-5 through at least 10 years old. I'm so sorry to see that this is out-of-print. If I didn't still have my childhood copy I'd probably spring for the "collectible" out-of-print copy, or scour used book stores, thrift stores and the like. This is a Beyond 5 stars wonderful classic book. You might have to put white gloves on the kids if you're paying 100 bucks for it, though.
