Summary: Laughing is good for the soul
Comment: A mystery from the point of view of an autistic child is an interesting idea. Is it politically correct that murder and autism should be the source of such great humor that I was practically crying from laughing? Political correctness can take a flying leap, if you ask me because Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time" is funny stuff and a book worth reading. I felt the exact same way as when I read Rikki Lee Travolta's "My Fractured Life" and laughing so hard at his humor on addictions and death. At first I felt guilty for finding this stuff funny because its so not "PC" but then you just have to breath a sigh of relief and realize its about time we start laughing at the outrageous funny things that these great authors are putting out there for us and stop worrying if we are "allowed" to feel what we do. If it's funny, enjoy it. Buy "Curious Incident." Buy "My Fractured Life." Buy anything that makes you laugh and don't feel guilty about it. Laughing is good for the soul.

Summary: An autistic boy tries to make sense of his world.
Comment: Mark Haddon's touching novel, "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time," is the story of a British fifteen-year-old boy named Christopher Boone. Christopher has a form of autism. He is a genius in math and science, but he has trouble understanding facial expressions and he communicates with others without making eye contact. He abhors being touched by anyone, and he groans and withdraws when he is upset. Christopher goes to a special school and he clings to the routines that make his life bearable.

One night, Christopher's orderly world is shaken when he finds a neighbor's dog, Wellington, dead of stab wounds. Christopher loves dogs and he determines to use his sharp mind to find out who killed Wellington. Christopher's father orders his son in the strictest terms not to stick his nose into other people's affairs. However, Christopher ignores his father's orders and his investigation leads him down some unexpected paths.

Haddon's book is a brilliant journey into a world that few people can even contemplate. What must it be like to have a literal mind that can process only certain types of arcane information but is powerless to handle the everyday social interactions that we all take for granted? Haddon, who has worked with autistic individuals, has deep compassion for Christopher. By writing this book from Christopher's point of view, the author enables the reader to feel this boy's confusion, anger, and heartbreak as his life begins to unravel. Haddon not only lifts the curtain on an autistic's boy's world, but he also explores the strain that having such a child places on his parents.

"The Curious Incident" is eloquent, poignant, darkly humorous, and unforgettable. I predict that this book will become a classic and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the intricate workings of the human mind and heart.

Summary: Review from an Autistic
Comment: The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, by Mark Haddon, is a very interesting and insightful book about a kid with autism, a mental disability/ability that, in a nutshell, causes those affected to be more literal and trusting. He discovers that his neighbor's dog, Wellington, has been stabbed with a pitchfork and killed. Following in the footsteps of his favorite mystery character, Sherlock Holmes, he attempts to find out who did this crime. It ends up as a pretty big shocker.
I like this book because I can relate to the main character. I have autism too, though not as severe as that of this character. So I kind of get some of the things he does. For example, if he sees a certain number of cars that are the same color, all in a row, as he is being driven to school, it defines how his day is going to be. I thought that that seemed interesting, and held its own strange logic. All in all, this is a good book that anyone who likes a good mystery should read.
