Summary: Even Funnier Than the Original
Comment: Don't worry that this sequel might be a letdown from "Confessions of a Shopaholic". I thought it was even better. Becky Bloomwood is back, this time with her television career going well, her love life in great shape ... but, with those old spending habits as strong as ever. Accompanying her boyfriend to the States, she hits New York City like a whirlwind and injects more than a little money into the NY economy. The plot of this book is, I think, quite a bit stronger than the first book with a little intrigue lurking in the background. If you've ever enjoyed a good shopping spree in New York (or have ever dreamed of having one), you will love her exploits. I read this book in a 24 hour period - I laughed and laughed and just couldn't get enough of it.

Summary: a fun read, hampered by worry for the main character
Comment: Becky Bloomwood is back with a new slew of problems (brought on by her shopaholism) that threaten her finances, job, and, this time around, her relationship with the man she loves! This sequel to "Confessions of a Shopaholic" finds Becky hosting her own successful personal finance show on cable, with a book deal to write her very own self-help money-management manual. She is also seriously involved with Luke Brandon, a workaholic who runs a successful London PR firm.
But Becky is not completely transformed --- she increased her spending to keep up with her increased income; she has already spent the 1000 pound advance from the publishers without writing a word (and the first draft was due last week -- oops, she forgot); her understanding bank manager has been replaced by one who will not indulge her, and she is back in hock with her bank overdraft and myriad credit cards. She is hiding her many new purchases from her flatmate Suze, whom Becky has made promise to monitor her spending for her. And now she and Luke are off to Manhattan as he hammers out some business deals, where there are all sorts of new stores for her to explore and, since the American dollar is less than the British pound, then everything is technically a bargain, right?
Although told in a fun light style with many fun moments, it is still disturbing to see how careless Becky is, willing to throw away everything for a new pair of shoes or two (in lilac and clementine, size 6). Even more disturbing is how she lies about everything to everyone. SHE NEEDS THERAPY! That is the only thing that keeps this book from being really entertaining -- this is a real sickness, and you get scared for her at times, even if she is not a real person.

Summary: So Funny, Better than the Original
Comment: I loved the original book of this series "Confessions of a Shopaholic." However, "Shopaholic Takes Manhattan" is even funnier-and it has more of a plot, more character development, and a more serious resolution.
Becky Bloomwood is the heroine of the "Shopaholic" series. By day, she is a TV financial journalist who delivers serious and sober advice on pension funds and the bond market. By night (and by weekend, by lunch hour etc.) she is a confirmed shopaholic who just can't stop herself from purchsing "just one more thing."
In this book, she and her rich, successful boyfriend spend a few weeks in New York as they decide whether or not to live there. While Luke (her boyfriend) spends his days in meetings, Becky "takes in the sights" (e.g., saks, Barneys, soho stores, etc.) and learns about the native customs (e.g.,sample sales, personal shoppers). She also is trying to establish her television career in New York and her descriptions of her meetings are very funny and actually spot on.
Of course, her endless spesnding eventually causes her endless headaches and a day of reckoning with Luke...and you will laugh very hard on your way to and throughout the climax of the book.
Kinsella has a tremendous gift in the way she manages to keep most of the book in the present tense-you feel as if you are with Becky in Barneys (or Prada or Saks) as she wrestles with her conscience on that one last purchase.
Highly recommended for fans of chick lit.
